Grandma, Me, and the Prime Rib Dinner

UNAPOLOGETICALLY YOUNG, BLACK AND FEMALE

I didn’t know that when I posted a video on my website’s Weight Loss Diary of my grandmother and I going out to eat that it was going to kick off such a firestorm in my family. My initial thought when I posted it was that I was going to use the video to one, let my family know that I need help with my grandmother and here’s why and two, initiate a healthy long overdue conversation among Black people as it relates to food.

I come from that generation of Black people whose grandparents assumed a parental role early on in my life. And at 32, it seems to me that roles have reversed. While when I was younger it was my grandma who’d take the penny out of my hand before I swallowed it or made sure that I ate every forkful of squash that was on my plate, today I have assumed the role of food police-and let me tell you, it’s no easy role. I mean, it’s one thing to tell a child what they can and cannot eat, but try telling your 88 year-old grandmother that she can’t have her prime rib dinner.

Well that’s just what happened last weekend when I took my grandmother out to dinner. Because of her gout, walking is extremely painful and difficult for her and that means that she spends the majority of her time in the house. And while she doesn’t know it, it makes me feel guilty that she can’t get out of the house more and do the things that she enjoys. But it’s not just the gout, with it she has issues with her blood pressure, hip, and yes-diabetes. And because of all of this, she’s put on an unhealthy amount of weight for her age and height.

You know my story. As my grandma would say, I was big as a house until about two years ago when I made some drastic changes in my life. And while I am not 100 percent there, I am a long ways from where I was. I had a lot of inspiration to work from. Besides being dumped, for the first time I started to really look at the women in my family and noticed the seemingly hereditary trait of being obese. But that isn’t the half of it, there’s a long history of cancer and diabetes to go with that too and relatives who are still in the prime of their life but couldn’t run a block or walk a couple of flights of stairs to save their own life.

Back to grandma. So being the “young one” around, I am the one who oftentimes takes her to the doctor’s and gets to hear the dos and don’t with the medications, exercise, and food. I am also the one who gets to hear about her aches and pains and has to watch her struggle just to get around

Ektron Webcast Features NASDAQ Chief Marketing Officer on Use of Web Content Management to Achieve Business Goals

Market Wire, March, 2010

Ektron Inc., a Web content management , social software and marketing optimization solution provider, has released a new webcast demonstrating how its Web content management system is being applied by organizations large and small to drive revenue growth, achieve operational efficiency and build customer loyalty.

“Web content management, or WCM, is linked inextricably with the key business goals and issues of an increasing number of organizations,” notes featured speaker, Mick MacComascaigh, Gartner research director. “And this in turn has changed how the people who land on a Web site need to be viewed. They’re no longer visitors, but users. They not only want to access content, they also want to interact with it. Businesses need to understand user intent more accurately and deliver content that provides the best experience to those users.”

MacComascaigh goes on to explore the benefits of social software in terms of how it can be used to run, grow and transform business, such as creating new interactive marketing solutions based on WCM. “Web content management can provide tailored content by linking with social media,” says MacComascaigh. “Incorporating analytics in the WCM platform is another key to understanding interactions between a business and its Web site visitors.”

The webcast also features John Jacobs, chief marketing officer of NASDAQ OMX, discussing NASDAQ’s choice of Ektron as the organization’s content management system vendor and NASDAQ’s use of Ektron’s social tools to create a vibrant online community. “When we had to pick a CMS vendor for our site, we knew how critical that decision would be,” says Jacobs. “We needed out-of-the box capabilities, but we also needed the ability to customize the platform. We needed a system that could support search engine optimization, and Ektron rose to the top in that category

Second, you need to have

by admin on Sep.04, 2010, under Uncategorized

Second, you need to have a budget for home remodeling. You need to keep some money aside for home remodeling. Also, keep in mind that during the process of home remolding, sometimes there are unanticipated expenditures. So, always have some funds aside for that.

You can choose either specialized contractor or general contractor for your tasks, depending on your requirements. Also, consult your friends and relatives when choosing a contractor. If possible, see their past works to get an idea of the quality of their work. Home renovation does not happen everyday, and when you get it done, ensure that you get the best.

GARDENING REMINDERS: Hit some musical and botanical high notes at

CHECK OUT THE Birds, Blossoms and Blues Festival at the Norfolk Botanical Garden. It starts with a blues concert on Thursday at 6 p.m. featuring Hampton Roads native Gary US Bonds and continues over the weekend with family birding activities and a plant sale open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and next Sunday. Look for great deals on unusual tropicals and wildlife habitat plants as well as the usual variety of plants. Go to www.norfolkbotanicalgarden.org for details .

Fish safety

As goldfish and koi become active again, make sure to feed them. If visiting herons decimate your fish pond, place clay drainage tiles in your pond. Fish can escape attack by swimming into the pipes. It will also give fish a place to escape from the heat during the summer.

Cool garden

For an elegant, reserved garden consider a white garden. White flowers and green foliage give a cooling feel to a garden room and create a simple but refined atmosphere. Make sure to have chairs or benches in the area, since people will tend to linger there. Some excellent plants for this are gardenias, white camellias, calla lilies and peegee hydrangeas.

Pruning advice

Prune your azaleas, forsythia and viburnums after they have finished flowering if necessary. Prune out dead branches on other plants now if you haven’t already. Some late plants will only now have buds starting to swell, so take a good look before pruning.

Time to itch

Mosquito time is upon us again. Make sure you don’t have any old pots or containers lying around from your spring planting that can hold rainwater

There is an old saying that if

by admin on Sep.03, 2010, under Uncategorized

There is an old saying that if you do not get a positive answer to your question, change the way you pose the question? Statistics can also be misused by the inclusion in a statement of a precise number. Indeed, our truth is composed of our understanding, but we must see events in their relationships. Yet there exist more ways of abusing the science of Statistics by deliberately distorting the results and by providing the partial picture not presenting the complete story.

The case in our chosen article is very similar to the last way of misuse of Statistics. Namely the article does not reveal any meaningful insights and the fact is that later the commending lead of the NDP party did not materialize at all at the election time.

Currently, there are 3 standards – a,

by admin on Sep.03, 2010, under Uncategorized

Currently, there are 3 standards – a, b and g.

In a nutshell, 802.11b and 802.11g are compatible with each other while 802.11a isn’t compatible with either. Due to the incompatibility issues with the other two standards and because it’s an older less robust standard I would stay away from cards using it.

Between b and g, b is cheaper but slower, while g is more expensive but faster. It’s also worth considering that adding a b-speed device to a network that has g-speed devices will often slow the whole network down to b-speed, making the g-devices pointless. Basically, the network will operate at the speed of its weakest link.

If your wireless device doesn’t conform to the right standards, it’s not going to be much good to you. I often see uninformed people bidding for used wireless equipment on eBay, not realizing that it’s going to be terribly slow and may not work with other equipment they might have.

Use free weights. Flat

by admin on Sep.03, 2010, under Uncategorized

Use free weights. Flat presses work your entire chest muscles, and are probably the best mass chest muscles builder. Dumbbells are superior to barbells in that they allow a greater range of motion, more balancing work is required and therefore recruiting more fibres and synergistic muscles for massive growth. However you should do barbell presses for variations and shocking effect for further muscle growth.

Next will be the incline dumbbell press. Inclines work the top of your chest muscles giving you the broad and wide chest like those of comic book super heroes. The exercise is executed the same as the flat press except that you are lying on an incline bench. I do not recommend decline presses as that will develop your lower pecs and gives you a drooping chest look. We want a strong and powerful chest, not tits!

Another great mass builder for your chest is what I call the superman dip. If you do the vertical dip, you will end up working your triceps and shoulders more. If you lean forward and tuck in your chin into your chest and perform the exercise like a plane taking off or Superman flying towards the sky, then you will place major stress on your chest for a full and wide chest development.

How to give a great presentation

How much hands-on training have your people had with delivering effective presentations? A great presentation is not only informative, but exciting for the customer. It may be the last or only opportunity you have to leave an impression on your customer ? make it a good one!

9. How to think outside the box

Life isn?t linear, and sales aren?t either. Teach, encourage, and applaud creative approaches to even common problems. Being able to think on their feet will help them adapt to the ever-changing demands of the customer and their unique approaches will separate them from the competition.

The basic New York cheesecake recipe

by admin on Sep.03, 2010, under Uncategorized

The basic New York cheesecake recipe includes eggs, cream cheese, cream, sugar and a handful of other small additions. The crust is generally a graham cracker crust, which is one of the simplest in the world to make.

When presented with such simple ingredients, the inexperienced cook might think success was in the bag and hit the mega mart to pick up all the goods. And while you would indeed produce something that looked remarkably like a New York cheesecake, when the taste hit your palate, you’d know something had gone terribly wrong.

Let’s start with the cream. You can go to the grocery store and buy what you need out of the refrigerator case in the dairy section. Instead of that, however, how about finding your nearest dairy farm or co-op market? Another good choice would be your nearest farmer’s market. Think farmer’s markets are just for produce? Think again!

Farmer’s markets are the home for all the best of your locally grown and made products. From the freshest local produce to local delicacies like country ham, cheeses and baked goods, you will find a great selection at most markets.

It is money well

by admin on Sep.03, 2010, under Uncategorized

It is money well spent. I would never buy a home without purchasing a home warranty. I never sell my own properties without a warranty for the buyer. It just makes good sense.

10.

Not meeting the neighbors before you make an offer.

Don?t you really hate it when your neighbors suck? Don?t you think it would be a good idea to do a little door knocking before you buy your new home? How about going online to look at your state?s website for registered sex offenders?

I did a little door knocking before I bought a foreclosed home in St. George. I was buying the home for my personal use and as part of the ?due-diligence? I decide to meet the neighbors. I asked which house was the ?bad house? on the street. I came to find out it was the home I was buying because the previous owners were noisy, rude, dirty, and didn?t care for their home. I changed that by buying the home and moving into it.

There you go; 10 simple steps to keep yourself, as a homebuyer, out of hot water.
